Boldly Going Beyond...

No spoilers, the new Star Trek movie is, as expected, entertaining. But yet it left me feeling that I'd seen nothing new! There was a strange irregularity that I can't mention here. After three years in Kirk's five year mission supposedly going where no man has gone before, there was quite a surprise.
This is science fiction, a genre with no limits or so it would seem. Within minutes the usual plot unfolds; the first part of the film setting the scene and introducing the players. Then follows the action. Of course all the main men and women play their heroic part, but it's not always aparent why they are there at all!
The limits ARE there. The writers bringing their own. Their influences apparent as the plot unfolds, an unexpected twist here and there and a corny joke courtesy of Mr Pegg (the only thing lacking was a Zombie!). Oh wait...
.
Some concepts were good: they were original, but again limited, and soon the enemy was defeated using tried and tested methods.
As a writer of fantasy I can confirm there are no limits except the ones I choose to impose. Imagination knows no limits. However, when working on the sequel, there is a danger of writing the same plot all over again (Independence Day 1&2). It is important to take time over such things; a luxury which the film script writer may not have,
A trip to the cinema is good now and again. But I'll stick to reading a good book for now. Until that is I start to recognise the same plot over again, in which case I will change authors.
Remember, there are thousands of authors out there. awaiting discovery. Try something new. Boldly go beyond the norm. You may just be surprised.
